Project 3: Monster Maker

For this project, I played around sketching different animals combined together but didn't like any of them. I wanted something that looked more like a monster and less like an animal. I started with some basic features I knew I wanted to use. I tried a single eye as the main feature and I knew I wanted ram-like horns.

First sketch

Here I tried to add legs like a bird but felt it made the body too heavy.
After some changes, this was the final image I decided on.

Traced onto watercolor paper..

For the body, I started with an initial layer of watercolor and then added colored ink over the watercolor to give it bolder color in places. Sections I wanted to stay white, like his teeth and eye, I applied a mask to prevent the color from bleeding into the white spaces.

The horns and claws I used watercolor only. The base layer of the grass is watercolor with ink used to define the blades of grass and create texture. The sky is a light wash of blue watercolor so it gives it subtle color and doesn't distract from the rest of the image.

Google Doodle: Design 2

I liked the first design but I wanted to try something different. I tried making it look you were looking down on a table with a coffee setting. I tried to make the "g" out of a cup and coffee spilling on the table to make the rest of the g shape.

I didn't like this sketch at all and almost abandoned it completely but later went back to it and made some changes.

Took the donut off the plate, added the creamer and moved the coffee stain to the bottom of the cup to create the "g". I like this better and decided to go with it and started adding color pencil to the final image:

Then scanned and Photoshopped in with Google search bar:

Google Doodle: Design 1

For project 2, the Google doodle, I picked National Coffee day (because who doesn't like coffee?). I tried to think of different objects associated with coffee like bags of coffee beans, donuts and spoons.

This was my initial sketch for the doodle:

I thought the "G" got lost so I changed it to just a few beans. Then I had the idea of a coffee stain ring for one of the O's and the spilled cup next to the "e":

After the first class critique, I made some some changes to I liked the coffee pot in the original sketch so I tried adding it back in and tried a different angle with the cup:

I took out the donut and added mini creamers and came up with this final sketch for the first design:
